What are the Best Mattress Protectors- Airbnb Options for Hosts

Best Mattress Protectors For Your Bed
Pin Me!

Mattress protectors are an essential item for every Airbnb host. They protect one of the most expensive items in your home from dust mites, bed bugs, stains, crumbs….you name it!

What are the best mattresses for Airbnb?:

Mattress protectors are easily cleaned by you or your cleaner.  They keep you from having to deep clean your mattress or even throw it away, once contaminates have been introduced.  This is a small, one-time purchase that can save you untold amounts of time, money, and hassle down the road.

So which of these two options suit your Airbnb needs?:

  1. You want a fully encapsulated protector that is hard to get on/ off your bed, but protects against bed bugs.
  2. You want a protector that is removable and washable that only slips over the top of the mattress. You are willing to only protect against guest spills/ stains, and aren’t really worried about bed bug protection.

Either approach is justified, and we have found great options for both situations. Here is a comparison chart starting with the SafeRest protector which is made for slipping over the top of the mattress. The Linenspa and Utopia are fully encased options:

Top Airbnb Pick For Easy Cleaning: SafeRest Premium Hypoallergenic Mattress Protector

The SafeRest Premium Hypoallergenic Mattress Protector has a top layer made of terry cloth and cotton.  It is breathable and allows air to flow as it would through a regular fitted sheet. Underneath the terry-cotton layer is a waterproof membrane.  The membrane contains no vinyl, PVS, phthalates, or chemical treatments.

This membrane layer will form to your bed without changing the feel of your mattress.  It is very thin, and will not stick to your guest’s skin or make noises if you move around in the bed.

Unless there has been a spill or the mattress protector has gotten dirty in some way, you should launder it quarterly.  It can be washed and dried in the same manner as your other bed linens.

This comfortable, airy mattress protector will keep your mattress free of dust mites.  It can also be easily cleaned in the event that something is spilled on the bed or body fluids get onto the bed.  It will keep your mattress clean and odor-free. This product comes with a 10-year warranty.

The SafeRest mattress protector fulfills its claim to be waterproof.  You can even pour water onto your newly purchased mattress cover and leave it for several minutes.  You will find that it stands up to the test and that no water will get through onto your mattress.

The waterproof membrane is also an effective shield against dust mites.  Without the cover, dust mites tend to burrow into the mattress and lay eggs.  If you keep this product laundered on a quarterly basis, you will no longer have a problem with allergens like dust mites.

A drawback to the SafeRest mattress protector is that the waterproof membrane does not extend over the sides of the mattress.  The product itself works like a fitted sheet, so the bottom of your mattress is not protected either.

This can mean a spill that goes down the side of the bed could penetrate your mattress.  It could also be penetrated by bed bugs and dust mites from the sides of the bed, though that is less likely to happen.

The SafeRest mattress protector is easy to clean.  It can be washed and dried along with your sheets. Most residue it may have absorbed will come out in the washing machine, leaving no bad odor behind, and preserving your mattress.  Be careful not to use bleach products, as these can weaken and destroy the waterproof membrane.

Customer/ User Impression:

People who purchased the SafeRest mattress protector were largely pleased with their product.  Reviewers said that they liked how easy it was to take the product on and off of their beds. Some purchasers chose to test the waterproof capability of their new mattress cover and were pleased to find that no liquid made it through the waterproof membrane onto the mattress.

Complaints about the SafeRest model included that it did not cover the whole mattress, making it possible to still acquire bed bugs.  It also tended to slip off of the mattress from time to time.

Top Airbnb Pick For Bed Bug Protection: Utopia Bedding Zippered Mattress Encasement

The Utopia Bedding Zippered Mattress Encasement zips around the full mattress, rather than fitting on like a sheet.  The waterproof aspect of this product comes from a membrane made of polyurethane. This layer is breathable, yet it will allow no water or other liquids through to your mattress.

Terry cloth and cotton fabric covers the polyurethane layer, so that the mattress protector feels more like a sheet.  It comes with a zipper guard that keeps bed bugs or dust mites from getting through to your mattress through the small hole where the zipper closes.

The Utopia Bedding Zippered Mattress Encasement is absolutely waterproof.  It will keep liquids from penetrating your mattress and will hold up to even the biggest spills.  The full encasement of the bed, plus the zipper guard technology keeps dust mites or bed bugs from having even a chance of getting through to your mattress.

It can be difficult to cover the mattress, and the job will probably require two people.  The mattress protector is made of strong material, and tends to hold up and not rip or tear, even after many washings.

Customer/ User Impression:

People were largely pleased with the Utopia model, upon their first use.  They found that the waterproof membrane worked well. The sewing structure was impressive, and the product did not tear.  The high-quality sewing and zipper guard effectively kept dust mites and bed bugs out of the mattress.

A few users were disappointed to find that the waterproof membrane weakened several washings, and that their mattress cover was no longer effective at blocking out liquids.  But the majority of comments did not have this issue. A couple of comments noted that Utopia Bedding product is noisier than expected, but this type of comment was only limited to a minority of the comments.

Runner Up For Airbnb Bed Bug Protection: Linenspa Zippered Mattress Encasement

Instead of going on like a fitted sheet, the Linenspa Zippered Mattress Encasement zips around your entire mattress.  This keeps the mattress protector from ever slipping off of the bed and protects both the sides and underside of the mattress.

The product is made up of a thin, lightweight, waterproof membrane, with fabric sewn over the top.  Linenspa’s mattress encasement is breathable, and should not make excess noise when your Airbnb guests move around in the bed.  It is completely waterproof and comes with a 10 year warranty for manufacturer’s defects.

The Linenspa Zippered Mattress Encasement provides excellent, waterproof protection from spills and bodily fluids.  It can be easily washed and preserves the life of your mattress. Liquids do not penetrate its waterproof barrier. The fact that it zips all the way around the mattress is more assuring, and an extra layer of protection.  You will need to plan for two people to get it installed over the mattress.

Customer/ User Impression:

Users of the Linenspa Encasement said that while the mattress protector was hard to get on the bed, it did protect against spills, allergens and bedbugs.  Its waterproof capabilities stood the test of time, and washing the product did not seem to damage it in any way.

What users complained about more than anything was the sewing behind the product.  Some stitches came apart over time, but this was not a typical issue with the protector.

Conclusion

The SafeRest mattress cover seemed best for Airbnb hosts whose main goal is to keep liquids and body fluids off of the bed.  It is also easier to take on and off the bed than the other models. The mattress cover stood up well to multiple launderings and continued to keep liquids from penetrating the mattress.  The drawback to this model was that it does not cover the whole mattress.

The Linenspa product had the advantage of zipping over the whole mattress.  It was effective at keeping spills and body fluids from penetrating the mattress.  It also provided full coverage to keep out allergens and bed bugs. The quality of the stitching was the one item that could be improved upon.

The Utopia Bedding encasement also zipped over the whole bed.  The sewing was high quality. It was not found to rip, and the extra measure of the zipper guard kept out dust mites and bed bugs.  The waterproof membrane worked well at first, but the protective lifespan was not as great.

Each of the products above are great options for Airbnb hosts.  An unprotected mattress may collect stains and odors over time, and purchasing a mattress protector can extend the life of your mattress and help your Airbnb’s bottom line.
