Why Smart Technology for Secure Homes?

As urban areas expand into suburban areas, crime can follow. Thankfully, we all have the ability to render our homes safer through technology. You don’t need to be able to afford a full home security system to improve the surveillance and security around your home with the new deadbolt products out there.

That said, you don’t need to live in a high-crime area or be concerned about your security being compromised to take advantage of the new smart locks.

People with children appreciate the keypads and alerts so parents know when their children and teens get home from school.

If you have a relative visiting for a few days, coded doors allow them to come and go without finding the spare key, and those who own short-term rentals can have a new code with each new guest, ensuring the guest only has access for the days allotted.

Schlage Connect Zigbee-Certified Smart Deadbolt and Amazon Cloud Cam Key Smart Lock Kit

The Schlage Connect Zigbee is a great Smart Lock Kit for your Airbnb. I appreciate the security of monitoring of a front door from the office, or where ever I happen to be. This is a camera – lock combo to allow you to see who is coming or going from your home.

This deadlock is compatible with Alexa, giving you 30 codes so you know who is in your house and when by sending you an alert. You can give a specific code to your cleaner, to monitor when they are coming and going.

You also have the option of seeing a video of the person at the door. It has a fingerprint-resistant keypad and allows you to lock or unlock your door from anywhere.

For some people, connectivity is an issue with this kit. Make sure you’re comfortable with basic troubleshooting if installing and programming this kit yourself.

Schlage FE599NX CAM 619 ACC 619 Home Keypad Lever with Nexia Home Intelligence

This Schlage FE599NX is the most basic lock that I looked at. It has physical buttons rather than a keypad screen. I like how solid it looks. It does limit the number of combinations compared to other models.

I was worried that this lock would be a bit outdated but it works with Alexa or other home control systems allowing it to work in tandem with other purchased security features.

It sends a text message alert whenever someone enters a code and you can also apply temporary codes to allow service people or guests into your house. If you chose not to use it with a remote device, it also will work as a keypad entry.

Because there’s a motor in the deadbolt, the batteries do need to be changed every three months, depending on usage. All smart locks require battery changes, but this seems like it needs new batteries more often than other models.

Schlage BE479CAM619 Sense Smart Deadbolt

The Schlage BE479CAM619 Sense Smart Deadbolt is the perfect lock for an Apple household. Sometimes it can be hard to find household equipment to work with your existing Apple system. This lock solves that issue.

This lock is designed specifically for people using Apple Homekit. It has a classic looking number pad that’s fingerprint resistant and looks beautiful from both the outside and inside of your home. This lock will issue an alarm if the door is tampered with or attacked. It also holds 30 access codes.

It’s recommended that you use Apple products with this lock. This lock is not yet compatible with Android technology.

Schlage Lock Company BE469ZP CEN 619 Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt with Century Trim, Z-Wave Plus enabled

The Schlage BE469ZP has a sleek, modern look with its fingerprint-resistant touchscreen. I can easily imagine this lock on a newly built ultra-modern house or condo.

While the design is terrific, this lock is also high-tech –holding 30 access codes and giving out three different alerts so you know the difference between regular activity, a tampered lock, and forced entry. The Schlage Connect Century Touchscreen Deadbolt also uses Z-wave technology and is Alexa compatible for voice control.

Drawbacks to this product include its inability to handle humid climates – which is a deal-breaker for people living in wet climates like the Northwest. I’d recommend another model if you happen to get excess rain or your eaves are not deep enough over your doorway. It also takes some skill to install. Consider hiring a professional if you’re not “handy”.

Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt

The Schlage Encode is one of the most flexible smart locks you can buy. When we update our entryways, this lock will be the one we choose. You can use it with Alexa – or not.

It comes with its own Wi-Fi connection so you can operate it from anywhere you happen to be, using just the Schlage Home App or Key App. It’s programmable with 100 codes and has the option of voice control. The touchscreen pad is fingerprint resistant and looks sleek and modern.

There are a few issues you might face with this lock. While it does work with Alexa or Samsung SmartThings, the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt is not currently Apple Homekit accessible. It also relies on Schlage or Key updating their app if you choose not to use a hub.

There was an issue a few months ago with the Amazon system failure causing both Key and Schlage apps to malfunction. It affected the remote functionality of this lock as well as others when used with just the app.

When all is said and done, this lock seems like the best choice for my family.

Schlage BE469ZP CAM 716 Connect Smart Deadbolt

The Schlage BE469ZP lock uses a hub to connect to Alexa and uses Z-wave technology. It has a fingerprint-resistant touchpad, an alarm feature for door attacks, and allows you to add up to 30 codes.

I question whether this lock is a good choice for most people…

Some keypad malfunctioning has been reported. Functionality also depends on the app and hub used with this product because the Schlage App doesn’t support this deadbolt lock. Make sure you have a compatible home system in place before expecting alerts from this device. While other locks seem fairly easy to install or set up, this one requires more work.

The Bottom Line

The days of leaving your doors unlocked with the knowledge that your neighbor would spot and report any suspicious activity are unfortunately a part of our history, not our present. These locks bring back that peace of mind, however.

Knowing who is accessing your door at any given time is a luxury that only the wealthy could afford in the past. New, affordable technology is making a secure home a reality for everyone, from city apartment dwellers to the residents in up-and-coming neighborhoods. Even people in rural areas are finding smart lock technology useful to monitor activity on a property with multiple buildings that are otherwise difficult to secure.

While smart lock technology was developed so you can keep people out of your home, many are finding it equally, if not more valuable as a tool to let people into your home. It gives access to maid service, deliveries, children, guests, and trusted neighbors. It allows people to open their homes as much as it allows them to secure their homes against harm.

When updating your home, consider how you can update your home’s functionality through the use of technology – starting with your locks!
