Expedia One Key Rewards: How It Works

One Key is Expedia’s free rewards program — and unlike most loyalty programs, it works across three platforms at once: Expedia, Hotels.com, and VRBO. Every eligible booking on any of those three sites earns OneKeyCash, and you can spend it on any of them.

If you book hotels, flights, vacation rentals, or car rentals through any Expedia Group platform and you’re not enrolled, you’re leaving money on the table. Here’s how the program actually works before you book.

What Is OneKeyCash?

OneKeyCash is the rewards currency you earn on eligible bookings through Expedia, Hotels.com, and VRBO. It has a straightforward 1:1 dollar value — $1 of OneKeyCash is worth $1 toward your next booking. You can use it to partially or fully pay for hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals, and activities on any of the three platforms. For flights, you must have enough OneKeyCash to cover the entire fare including taxes and fees.

OneKeyCash is not redeemable for cash and cannot be transferred between accounts. It expires after 18 months of inactivity — meaning if you make at least one eligible booking or redemption within any 18-month window, your balance stays active.

How Much Do You Earn?

The earning rate on hotels is reasonable. On flights it’s low — 0.2% means you earn $2 in OneKeyCash on a $1,000 flight. If you have a travel credit card earning 3–5x points on flights, the card rewards will almost always be worth more than the OneKeyCash on flights. Use One Key primarily for hotel and car rental bookings where the 2% rate is competitive.

The Four Tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold, Platinum

One Key has four status tiers based on trip elements booked per calendar year — not dollars spent. A “trip element” is any single bookable component: one hotel night, one flight, one rental car day, one activity. This structure makes it relatively easy to move up tiers even as an occasional traveler.

How to Earn OneKeyCash Faster

• Book for others through your account. OneKeyCash goes to the account that makes the booking, not the traveler. If you book hotels or car rentals for family or colleagues, all of that earning lands in your account. You don’t need to be on the trip.
• Stack car rentals with hotel stays. Each rental car day is a separate trip element. A 5-night stay with a 5-day rental car = 10 trip elements — halfway to Gold in a single trip.
• Use the One Key credit card for everyday spending. The One Key card (no annual fee) earns 3% OneKeyCash on Expedia/Hotels.com/VRBO bookings plus 3% on gas, groceries, and dining. The One Key+ card ($99/year) earns the same rates but gives you automatic Gold status. For regular travelers, the credit card is the fastest way to accumulate OneKeyCash without changing how you travel.
• Book activities and experiences. Car rentals and hotel nights are the easiest trip elements to stack, but activities count too — each tour, experience, or activity booked through Expedia is a trip element toward your status.

How to Redeem OneKeyCash

At checkout on Expedia, Hotels.com, or VRBO, you’ll see an option to apply OneKeyCash to your booking. You can use it to partially or fully offset the cost. For most bookings you can mix OneKeyCash with another payment method — for example, $50 in OneKeyCash plus $200 on your credit card for a $250 hotel.

A few restrictions to know before you try to use it. OneKeyCash cannot be applied to Pay at Property (Pay Later) bookings — it only works with Pay Now rates. Is One Key Worth It?

For most travelers who book hotels, vacation rentals, or car rentals through Expedia Group platforms: yes. Membership is free, the 10% member discount on hotels kicks in immediately at Blue tier, and the 2% OneKeyCash earning rate on hotels is comparable to most mid-tier travel credit card rewards on OTA bookings.

Where it’s less compelling: if you’re loyal to a specific hotel chain (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt) and care about earning elite nights and suite upgrades through that chain’s own program, booking through Expedia means most chain loyalty programs won’t award elite qualifying nights. For brand loyalists, booking direct usually makes more sense. For everyone else — independent hotels, vacation rentals, mixed-brand travel — One Key is the clear choice.

Is One Key the same as Expedia Rewards?

One Key replaced Expedia Rewards in 2023. If you had an existing Expedia Rewards account, it was automatically converted to One Key. Your previous status tier carried over. Expedia Rewards points were converted to OneKeyCash at a rate of $1 OneKeyCash per 100 Expedia points.

Can I use OneKeyCash earned on VRBO to book an Expedia hotel?

Yes — that’s one of the most useful aspects of the program. OneKeyCash earned on any of the three platforms (Expedia, Hotels.com, VRBO) can be redeemed on any of the three. Earn on a VRBO vacation rental, spend on an Expedia hotel.

When does OneKeyCash post to my account?

For Pay Now bookings, OneKeyCash posts within 3 days of trip completion. For Pay at Property (Pay Later) bookings and VRBO bookings, it typically posts within 45 days after check-out, though it can take up to 90 days.

Do trip elements reset every year?

Yes — trip elements reset on January 1 each calendar year. Your earned OneKeyCash balance does not reset and carries over indefinitely as long as you have activity every 18 months. Your status tier, however, must be re-earned each year based on that year’s trip elements.

Does booking on Expedia for someone else earn me OneKeyCash?

Yes — the account that makes the booking earns the OneKeyCash, regardless of who is traveling. If you book a hotel for a friend using your Expedia account, you earn the OneKeyCash. The friend doesn’t need to be a One Key member for you to earn.
